How to work out profit margin

Profit is simply your selling price minus what the item cost you. Margin expresses that profit as a share of the selling price, while markup expresses it as a share of the cost. They are easy to mix up: a 50% markup is only a 33% margin.

  • Profit = Selling price − Cost
  • Margin % = (Profit ÷ Selling price) × 100
  • Markup % = (Profit ÷ Cost) × 100

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between margin and markup?

Markup is your profit as a percentage of cost; margin is your profit as a percentage of the selling price. Buy at Rs 100 and sell at Rs 150 and that is a 50% markup but a 33% margin — same rupees, different base.

How do I calculate profit margin?

Profit margin % = (selling price − cost) ÷ selling price × 100. For example, (150 − 100) ÷ 150 × 100 = 33.3%.
