How to Calculate Profit Margin for a Shop
A simple guide to calculating profit margin for a Pakistani shop — gross vs. net margin, worked examples in rupees, and how to track it automatically.
Plenty of Pakistani shops are busy but not profitable. Sales look healthy, the counter is crowded — yet at month-end there’s little left over. Almost always, the reason is the same: the owner tracks sales, not profit.
This guide shows you how to calculate profit margin for your shop, with simple examples in rupees, so you always know what you’re really earning.
Markup vs. margin (they’re not the same)
This trips up a lot of shopkeepers. Say you buy an item for Rs 100 and sell it for Rs 150:
- Markup is on your cost: Rs 50 ÷ Rs 100 = 50% markup.
- Margin is on your selling price: Rs 50 ÷ Rs 150 = 33% margin.
Same rupees, different percentage. When you talk profit, use margin — it’s the share of each sale you actually keep.

Gross profit margin
Gross profit is what’s left after the cost of the goods you sold (COGS):
Gross profit = Selling price − Cost of goods sold Gross margin % = (Gross profit ÷ Sales) × 100
Example: In a month you sell Rs 500,000 of goods that cost you Rs 350,000.
- Gross profit = 500,000 − 350,000 = Rs 150,000
- Gross margin = 150,000 ÷ 500,000 = 30%
Gross margin tells you how well your buying and pricing are working — before your running costs.
Net profit margin
Net profit is what’s left after everything — including rent, salaries, utilities, and other overheads:
Net profit = Gross profit − Operating expenses Net margin % = (Net profit ÷ Sales) × 100
Example: From the Rs 150,000 gross profit above, subtract Rs 90,000 of monthly expenses (rent, staff, bills).
- Net profit = 150,000 − 90,000 = Rs 60,000
- Net margin = 60,000 ÷ 500,000 = 12%
Net margin is the number that actually matters — it’s the money the business earns.
Why so many shops get this wrong
- They don’t record cost price. Without COGS, margin is a guess.
- They confuse cash flow with profit. A full till isn’t profit if most of it is stock cost and expenses.
- They price by “feel.” A small pricing error, repeated across thousands of sales, quietly eats your margin.
- They can’t see it by product. Some items carry the shop; others lose money. Averages hide this.
Improve your margin without losing customers
- Know your margin per product, and give shelf space and promotion to your high-margin winners.
- Review low-margin items — renegotiate with suppliers or adjust prices slightly.
- Cut shrinkage — damaged, expired, and stolen stock is pure lost margin.
- Watch discounts and udhaar — every rupee discounted or written off comes straight off your margin.
Track it automatically
Doing this by hand every month is tedious — which is why most shops don’t. Software does it for you. invo.pk records the cost of every item, so the moment you sell, it knows your profit. The profit & margin report shows gross profit and margin across your shop, by product and by period, and exports to PDF.
No spreadsheets, no month-end guessing — just a clear answer to the only question that matters: am I actually making money?
